Shanghai Lily, No. 15

Gentlemen, gentlemen, please. Stay back behind the rope, and keep your hands to your sides. For you are about to witness a delight straight from the earthly gardens. A hoochie coochie that will curl your toes and straighten your hair. She danced for the Sultan and she shimmied for the Pope, but tonight she only has eyes for you.

For your entertainment, the rarest of the rare; a vixen that's been banned in every state east of the Mississippi. A titillation, a torturous temptation, a teasing tart to tickle your tackle. The flower of the Occident....Shanghai Lily.

Tagline

It took more than one man to change her name to Shanghai LIly.

How did you come up with your derby name?

I'm a big fan of film and love classic Hollywood, so I wanted a name that connected with that era. One of the names on my list of possibilities was "Shanghai Lily", a character Marlene Dietrich played in the movie Shanghai Express. When my mum suggested I could incorporate lilies into everything (I *heart* gardening), I knew that was the name for me.

How and when did you get involved in roller derby?

I have friends in Chicago who played roller derby for WCR and I thought it sounded like fun. A friend of mine in town forwarded an email to me about a league starting up in St. Louis, so I started going to Rollercade for the Tues/Wed open skate nights we had at the beginning until we found our practice space. I've been with the league since the very beginning (Oct/Nov 2005).

Any serious injuries?

Dislocated pinky, badly jammed ring finger, badly bruised tailbone and the infamous "bucket bruise".

Do you have a rival on the track?

Whatever girl is after my jammer.

Favorite position to play?

Pivot all the way.

Worst penalty ever committed?

Any penalty is a bad one. I'm not helping my team by sitting in the box, so I try my best to avoid penalties. Easier said than done, though. And sometimes you just can't help yourself. >:)

Any pre-bout rituals?

Maybe. But I'm too superstitious to tell you more than that.

What kind of skates and wheels do you roll on?

My skates are Riedell Wickeds. I prefer red Tuner wheels , but I wear out the grooves like whoa. If I don't have Tuners, I'll use red Speed Rays.

Most exciting moment in your derby career?

Being one of the captains of an amazing local team that went undefeated last season AND playing on a talented travel team that swept the Fall Brawl Tournament all in the same year was really something phenomenal to experience.

Favorite derby player?

My Mateys!

What is your derby pet peeve?

Poor sports(wo)manship.

Favorite adult bevie?

Cider or Champagne.
