Keligula, No. IV
Tagline
Let them hate me, so long as they fear meThe spirit of Caligula languished in the bowels of hell until one faithful day when he made a deal with the devil. In exchange for the soul of his beloved horse, the Roman Senator, Caligula was allowed to rise up and take possession of an unsuspecting Arch Rival Roller Girl. Derby history was made. Keligula is the reincarnation of the sadistic Roman Emperor seeking new methods of torture and out for vengeance. Opposing jammers and blockers BEWARE! Not even demons can keep this girl down.
How did you come up with your derby name?
Like many derby girls, I wanted my name to reflect me personally, but with some kind of wicked twist. My real name is Kelli. So with a little tweaking, I changed it to sound like one of the most infamous rulers of Rome: Caligula. I get a lot of response to my name, depending on whether someone is a history buff or a movie buff. I would recommend researching the history of Caligula, and NOT watching the movie. Even I couldn't make it through the whole movie. Disturbing! How and when did you get involved in roller derby?
I met Jessi Cut-Throat last summer during the Fourth of July. At the time I was recovering from a back injury. One of the first things she said to me was, 'You should join derby.' That's pretty much all it took. I had no idea that derby had been born again, let alone in St. Louis. As soon as the pain was reduced (a little over a month later) I went to my first practice. I've been hooked ever since.Any serious injuries?
I've been pretty fortunate considering the injuries that have plagued our league this year. (Especially Jessi Cut-Throat, my recruiter!) I was subject to the curse of the rookie debut. I injured my knee in March. Sprained some ligaments and got a hairline fracture to my patella. Oddly enough, it's still bruised! Basically you have to accept the fact that it is only a matter of time before you get injured playing derby. If you can't stand the thought of getting hurt, it's not for you.Do you have a rival on the track?
No, not really. Basically any of my opponents are my rivals.Favorite position to play?
I love to play them all! My size and perhaps speed is why I'm primarily a jammer. I've really been working on my blocking skills though, so look out! In addition, my team (M-80's whoop whoop!) emphasizes that everyone should be able to play every position. Blocking will make you a better jammer and vice versa.Worst penalty ever committed?
I usually don't have many penalties. I work very hard to try not to commit them. My husband and I have heated debates about this all the time. There's credence to both sides, I think. Perhaps if you're not getting penalties, you're not playing hard enough. Or maybe if you have to commit a penalty you're just not good enough. In the end, however, if you're sitting in the penalty box, you're not helping your team.Any pre-bout rituals?
The day of a bout I try to relax. I clean my skates and try to de-funk my gear. I always do yoga to try to calm down (I get pretty anxious to tell the truth.) I try to visualize what I will do. I also try to focus on only positive thoughts. What kind of skates and wheels do you roll on?
I'm going to be upgrading skates as soon as possible. Right now, my skates are your typical 'starter' skate: Riedell R3. My wheels are Devil Rays. Most exciting moment in your derby career?
I guess the most exciting moment was my rookie debut. However, I have a feeling that soon my most exciting moment will be when the M80s take the 2008 championship!Favorite derby player?
I have SO many! I really look up to girls that work hard and don't complain. We are fortunate in our league, we really have many role models. Some that have had a personal impact on me by taking time to work with me are: Overland Offender, Artemischief, Shanghai Lilly, Riddle Lynn, Eva Lasting Jawbreaker, The Siege, Enya Nightmare, Ignitrous, and the rest of my mateys! What is your derby pet peeve?
It's not particularly derby, but more general. I don't like to hear people complain or talk bad about someone/something. It's not constructive and can be contagious, you know the whole bad apple thing.Favorite adult bevie?
I have to pick just one?! Well, I know I like me some Gin-n-Juice on float trips!!!
